Images of London · St Paul’s CathedralSt Paul’s Cathedral was built on the site of the previous cathedral was was destroyed by the Great Fire of London in 1666.
It was designed and built by Sir Christopher Wren between 1675 and 1710 and was one of the many commissions undertaken by this great architect at the time. The dome is still one of the largest in the world, with a great view of the city.
Inside the cathedral there are many memorials and monuments to Britain’s leaders and artists, including Wellington, Turner and Nelson (whose body lies entombed in the Crypt), as well as to the ordinary soldiers and civilians who died during wartime.
